The 2024 White Mesa Bear Dance: Honoring Elders and Youth with “100 Years of Silence” Shawls

Elder and Youth dancers at White Bear Dance honored with gifts of shawls from the 100 Years of Silence - an entire summer of events and comes full circle to give back to the community of White Mesa. Project Director Shaun Ketchum presents with other prominent Ute ladies to give out these beautiful works of wearable art, in part supported by a grant from the San Juan County School District Education program's Native Youth Community Project. Toni Pelt, NYCP Outreach Liaison, helped provide materials such as hand needles, shawl materials, community members, including elders and grandmas to gather and develop the shawls. Each is stamped with the 100 Years of Silence logo and involved a process of measuring, cutting, and double-tying the shawls before completion. A truly community project, the shawls are made with love with the intention that they will be used in the future at more Bear Dances in years to come.
